Virtual vs Loom

Loom is the best tool for recording and sharing. Virtual is the best tool for understanding what your viewers actually got out of it.

Loom popularised async screen recording, point, record, share. For a one-way explanation, it is hard to beat. Comments are timestamped, view counts are visible, and the link is a single click away.

But once your video has more than a handful of viewers, the limits show. You see who watched. You do not see where they got lost. You do not see what they would have asked. And if forty viewers all hit the same confusion, you hear from at most one of them, usually after they have already given up.

Virtual was built around that gap. Every viewer can ask any question at any timestamp. The AI answers using your transcript and your trained answers, and every question feeds a confusion heatmap that maps to the exact second of your recording. You see what one-way recording cannot show: where the comprehension actually breaks.

Pick Loom when…

Pick Loom if you mainly need to record and send. Quick standups, async PR walkthroughs, one-off how-tos for a small team, Loom is faster to use, has a polished mobile recorder, and integrates everywhere.

Pick Virtual when…

Pick Virtual if the same recording will be watched by many people who will all hit the same questions. Customer onboarding, tutorial courses, sales demos, internal training, anywhere comprehension matters at scale.

Comments vs. Ask Assistant

Loom's timestamped comments are a one-shot channel, the viewer leaves a comment, you read it later, you reply later. That round trip is fine when there is one viewer. It collapses when there are forty: the same question gets asked forty times in forty different threads, you answer some, you miss most, and the rest of your viewers never see any of it.

Virtual's Ask Assistant answers instantly using your recording's transcript and frame analysis. If you have trained an answer, by saving your own words once, the AI uses your phrasing. Forty viewers asking "what is X" all get the same answer, in your voice, at the moment of confusion, without waking you up.

Watching the audience watch

Loom shows you who watched and for how long. Virtual shows you where they got lost.

The confusion heatmap divides your recording into segments and colours each one by question density: gray for "no questions", green for light, yellow for moderate, orange for high, red for critical. Hover and you see the exact viewer count and timestamp. The cliff at 03:55? Now you know to re-record those forty seconds.

Filtering noise from signal

Loom's comment thread fills up with reactions: "great vid!", "thanks!", "lol the cat 😂". They're lovely. They're also noise. You still have to scan every one to find the actual confusion.

Virtual's Mental State Tracking separates content doubts from conversational talk automatically. The greetings, the small talk, the "are you a bot", they're tracked for usage but kept out of your Master Doubts queue. You only see the questions that need an answer.

Pricing model

Loom charges per seat, every editor on your team needs a license. That makes sense for a recording tool: more recorders, more value.

Virtual charges by viewer questions because that's where our cost actually sits, and where your value gets created. A solo tutorial creator with 4,000 viewers a month gets the same product as a team of 50 with the same audience. No seat tax, no viewer fees, no enterprise contract for basic features.

Migrating from Loom

  1. Export your Loom videos as MP4 (Settings → Library → Download).
  2. Upload them to Virtual: drag and drop, no chrome extension needed.
  3. Share the Virtual viewer link in the same places you shared the Loom link.
  4. Optional: keep both for 30 days and compare the analytics. See how many questions Virtual surfaces that Loom never showed you.

You can upload an MP4 from any source, Loom export, OBS, QuickTime, ScreenStudio. We focus on what happens after the recording: understanding the audience's response. Recording itself is a solved problem.

Loom AI generates titles, summaries, and chapters, it works on the recording. Virtual's AI works on the audience: it answers viewer questions in your voice and shows you where comprehension breaks. Different products, different jobs.
